John Noseworthy is the CEO of the highly esteem health system, the
Mayo Clinic (Noseworthy, 2018). The Mayo Clinic was developed by two brothers,
Dr. Will Mayo and Dr. Charlie Mayo to help find cures or medical advancements
for those with serious illnesses or disabilities (Noseworthy, 2018). Dr.
Will Mayo and Dr. Charlie Mayo's new medical innovation that established its
core value in the foundation of teamwork (Noseworthy, 2018). Noseworthy (2018, para. 1) commented,
"... The combined wisdom of peers is greater than that of any individual."
Teamwork combines the ideas and thoughts of coworkers and the individual create
the most optimum solutions for the patients of the Mayo Clinic, especially with
the increasing interdependency of the industries (Noseworthy, 2018). Noseworthy (2018, para. 2) explains,
"Consider, for instance, Alzheimer's Disease and the opioid epidemic in
the U.S. These aren't just health-care problems; they pose as an enormous
socioeconomic burden."
Health-care dilemmas today seem to be increasing as the divide
between what is a human right and money becomes more and more debated and
changed. As different political views change so does the cost and access to care
for certain individuals (Noseworthy, 2018). To obtain the care needed for these
patients’ health-care providers now have to exceed their expected duties and
boundaries to form partnerships and collaborate with other organizations such
as insurance companies, biological companies, pharmaceutical companies or forms
of transportation to help them give their patients the most adequate and easily
obtainable care (Noseworthy, 2018). But having an effective and
successful collaboration is a difficult task to accomplish with barriers such
as not enough funding, competition and/or differing and disagreeing organizational
cultures and views (Noseworthy, 2018). Noseworthy (2018, para. 5) claims, "The
power of collaboration is evident in the progress we have made toward redefining
cancer as a chronic illness, with new methods of diagnosing and therapy such as
predictive genomics, immunotherapies, and charged particles." The
collaboration of governments, foundations, global organizations, pharmaceutical
companies, such as the World Dementia Council, can help improve the health of
the citizens of the world (Noseworthy, 2018). Also, the combination of artificial
intelligence, computer science, regenerative medicine has allowed patients to
gain health-care through the access of computers and cell phones or other technologically
mobile devices (Noseworthy, 2018). Noseworthy (2018, para. 9) says, "We
must strengthen this commitment to teamwork across sectors and in
public-private partnerships, keeping our eye on the patient- who must always
remain at the center of our efforts."
This article relates to topics expressed in the textbook and in
lecture. First of all, when running a business, no matter the type, you are
always working or interacting with people, whether it is employees, customers,
suppliers, banks, attorneys or other companies. Teamwork is a core value and
skill when running a business, whether it is a sole proprietorship, a
partnership or any type of corporation (Collins, 2018). Like discussed in the
article, teamwork helps a business gain access to the appropriate resources.
For example, if health-care providers are not willing to exceed their
boundaries they would not be able to provide the best possible solution for
their patients. In efforts to gain these resources nationally, the act of trading
can be involved. Trading is usually international because no national economy
can produce all the goods and services that its citizens need (Collins, 2018).
Within an individual business there are a variety of departments that support
the business such as management, operations, marketing, accounting and/or
finance (Collins, 2018). These amenities can either be within the business or
come from different suppliers such as suppliers of goods or services (Collins, 2018).
No one person is equipped with all the knowledge needed to successfully run a
business. Effective communication skills are necessary to promote teamwork and
collaboration in order to have optimal performance. Key points of a successful
business include; knowledge of the nature of your business, understanding basic
tenets of business management, maintain a proper attitude, secure adequate
funding, manage money efficiently, foster effective time management strategies,
understand how to manage people effectively, promote customer satisfaction, and
have a working knowledge of how to compete (Collins, 2018).
My business for "Company Me" will be my journey to
become a physical therapist. In certain instances, the physical therapist is
the owner of the clinic or runs most of the major business operations for the
clinic. For individual assignment 1, I chose an article from the health care
section of the Wall Street Journal. Since, I am going into a health profession
I thought it would be beneficial for me to choose an article that related to
the business side of medicine. This article was the perfect one to describe
business in the health profession and business in general. Especially in the
health profession, you not only have to work alongside your co-workers, but you
will also have to work alongside individuals in other healthcare professions.
Also, you have to work with suppliers of goods and services because there is
specific equipment needed to carry out the health care profession job that
cannot be produced in the clinic. For individual assignment 2, I plan on
choosing a health professions student or professional who has familiarity in
the clinic as well as the business management side of the physical therapy
profession. Choosing a role model in the health sciences or health profession
will also allow me to relate the topics discussed during the interview into my
own personal life. For my personal business plan in individual assignment 3, I
will surround my Company Me around the values of dedication, integrity and
compassion. Being in the health profession these values are important because
you are working with patients who are going through a difficult illness or
injury and you need to be dedicated and compassionate to help them and also
have integrity with the work you do within your clinic or business. For
individual assignment 4, I will try and find a business event where I can learn
and network with those of the business department. Also, if possible I will
look for someone who is in health professions and in the business department.
Interdisciplinary networking is very important to securing a successful
business plan. I will reflect on my past networking events to see what worked
for me at those events, but also examine ways to improve my approach. For
individual assignment 5, I will look to find a guest speaker from whom I
learned the most. All the guest lectures will benefit me in my continuing
career. So far, I have found the Nazil Saka and Rebecca Harris guest lectures
the most beneficial because they have both talked about the efforts in being an
entrepreneur and the amenities here at Chatham University that will benefit me
later on in the future.
